Even after 500 years of colonization, this neoliberal society continues to impose its own trauma onto the indigenous population. Just about every aspect of our lives has been colonized by the sickness of the west. Even though my ancestors were able to maintain a connection between the land and all living things for thousands of years, coloniality has severed that connection and understanding of the world.
Our relationship with our non-human companions can help us to decolonize our emotions. With the love and attention that they need and give, they help us to express and develop the qualities humanity will need to evolve from a state of fear. Often is expressing our emotions not valued that we begin to dismiss and suppress them, destroying any chance of freeing ourselves from the domination of coloniality. It is this symbiotic relationship with our companions that coloniality tries to sever, using science to justify and create hierarchies among all living and nonliving things, putting Men as one who conquers and everyone else, one to be conquered e.g Speciesism.
The treatment of our non-human counterparts becomes a reflection of the world we are creating for ourselves and others. And through my relationship with Alfie, I am able to create a more loving world.
